History & Origins
Descended from old Austrian farm dogs of the 18th century, developed as versatile all-purpose farm dog for guarding livestock and controlling vermin. Systematic breeding began in 1921 with official recognition in 1928. Nearly extinct post-WWII and by the 1970s, saved through dedicated breeding programs using remaining bloodlines.
