History & Origins
The Lithuanian Hound has been known since the 16th century and is the only recognized dog breed indigenous to Lithuania. Nearly extinct after World War II, it was revived through dedicated breeding efforts starting in 1957 with the first official standard published in 1986. Developed by crossing local hunting dogs with Polish and Russian hounds for forest hunting.
