History & Origins
The Phalène, or 'moth-eared' spaniel, is the original drop-eared variety of the Continental Toy Spaniel, predating the erect-eared Papillon. Known since at least the 16th century, these toy spaniels were favorites in European royal courts and are depicted in famous paintings. The FCI recognizes it as distinct from the Papillon for its ear carriage, though both types are often born in the same litters.
