History & Origins
An indigenous primitive dog native to the Ryukyu Islands, traditionally used for hunting wild boar in dense subtropical forests. The breed faced near extinction but was revived through dedicated preservation efforts starting in the 1980s by the Ryukyu Inu Hozonkai (Ryukyu Dog Preservation Society). Rare breed recognized by the Nihon Ken Hozonkai but not by major international kennel clubs.
