History & Origins
Developed by the indigenous Nivkh people of Sakhalin Island for sledding, hunting and transportation. Gained international fame after the 1958 Japanese Antarctic expedition where dogs Taro and Jiro survived a year abandoned in Antarctica. Despite revival efforts, the breed is considered functionally extinct since the last confirmed purebred died in the 1970s.
