Large, powerful Japanese mastiff-type breed developed for dog fighting, known for its imposing presence, calm and dignified temperament, and loyalty to family
History & Origins
Developed in Japan during the latter half of the 19th century by crossing native Shikoku dogs with Western breeds including Mastiffs, Great Danes, Bulldogs, and German Pointers to create a larger, more powerful fighting dog. Later bred for calmness and self-control.
